Updated Mini Basketball Rules

In an effort to improve the overall experience for our Mini athletes and provide a fun learning environment where age appropriate skill development and competition can occur, BNB has spent the last six months reviewing its rules for Mini basketball. BNB sought input and feedback from experienced coaches, officials, and minor association representatives from across the province. These modifications follow Canada Basketball recommendations for game play at the Learn to Train level, as well as the Long Term Athletic Development model.

BNB asks that these rule modifications are taken in the spirit that they are intended; to allow for a player-focused game where the priority is the process of developing fundamental skills rather than results.

New Division Assignments for Mini, Bantam and Middle School Levels

BNB minor associations and teams have traditionally been classified as “AAA”, “AA” and “A” based on criteria such as the size of the minor association, the geographic area, the number of athletes participating, the number of schools in the area, etc. Each year more and more teams are requesting to move either up or down from their assigned division for a variety of reasons. At the 2012 provincials, 18 teams at the mini and bantam levels played outside of those assigned divisions.

After meaningful discussion, it was approved by the BNB Board of Directors to move from the “AAA”, “AA”, “A” divisions at the mini and bantam levels, and “Small School” and “Large School” at the middle school levels to “Division 1, 2, 3….” (depending on the number of registered teams).

Click here for more detailed information.

BNB Rules Modification Clinics - Summary Notes

As coaches and officials should be aware, BNB implemented additional rule modifications in December 2010 for the Middle School, Bantam, Mini, Jr Mini and Puppy levels.

Bantam/Middle School - No Zone (full, 3/4, half, "in the key").
Mini/Jr Mini/Puppy - No Zone (full, 3/4, half, "in the key"). No Double Teaming.

In order to help educate coaches and officials, five clinics were offered around the province between October 2011-January 2012.  The following document summarizes the key points from the clinics and also addresses some questions that were asked.  Please note that this is not new information, but simply some clarifications to the rules.  Click here....
