BNB Announces Phase 2 of Return to Basketball Plan - Effective July 3, 2020

2020-06-30

Basketball New Brunswick is pleased to be moving to the next phase of their Return to Basketball Operational Plan.

With the transition to BNB’s Phase 2 Return to Basketball Guidelines, players will now be permitted to share a basketball within a group of 15 people (including players and coaches) and use “guided defence” during offensive decision making drills.

Sharing of Equipment:  Participants must be vigilante about proper hygiene techniques, avoid touching their face and activities must be stopped to allow for additional cleaning if there is a breach or compromise in the cleanliness of the equipment being shared.

Explanation of Guided Defense: Participants within the groups of 15 permitted to share basketballs may be used to provide physical guides or reads where there is momentary breaks of 2m distancing restrictions.  This could include participants being used as screeners, guided defenders to influence a reaction by the offense (drive/shoot decision, direction of drive decision, pass/finish, where/who to pass to, etc.).  Live play of any kind (1v1 up to 5v5) is prohibited along with any activity where participants would be required to spend elongated times in positions where 2m distancing measures would not be in place.

Additional changes to BNB's Return to Basketball Plan are in bold font below:
- Ensure all participants (athletes and coaches) at higher risk of severe COVID-19 complications (e.g., people over 65 years of age or people with underlying health conditions) are aware of the increased risks to their demographic (Phase 1 excluded these people from participating).
- Ensure parents remain outside the building (indoor facility) or away from the playing area (outdoors) if maximum numbers permitted have already been reached. If players are under the age of 12, parents should be accounted for in the group size ahead of the session taking place.
- Interactions with Other Provinces: While traveling within the Atlantic Bubble, you are required to follow the guidelines outlined by the Provincial Basketball Organization in that province.
