13 Odd Questions

Check out our "13 Odd Questions With...." feature!

At Basketball New Brunswick, we’re always focused on developing young athletes and promoting the sport of basketball across the province.... but that doesn’t mean we can’t have some fun for our membership!

In order to bring a fun twist to BNB – from its past to its present – we have developed a little segment we’re calling 13 Odd Questions With…
BNB will spotlight a basketball personality every few weeks and have them weigh in on, well, weigh in on 13 odd questions.   For previous "Odd People", check out the menu to the left!

(May 2016)

BNB is pleased to announce the hiring of Madeline Belding as the summer student program coordinator.  Madeline is currently an assistant coach with our U17 Girls program and was the head coach of our U15 Development Girls team in 2014 and 2015.  After playing her high school career as a Sussex Sonic at SRHS, Madeline went on to complete her undergraduate degree at Acadia University.  Sidelined by a knee injury, she knew she still wanted to be a part of the game so started to pursue it from a different angle.  This lead to her most recent academic/athletic endevour at the University of British Columbia, where she just completed her first year of a Masters in Kinesiology in the Coaching Science program.
Her first assignment of the summer.... 13 Odd Questions!

1.  Which movie have you watched more than any other and why?  Oh that’s a tough one, I’m a Netflix addict. But I would have to say Bridesmaids because it never fails to get me to laugh, no matter what mood I am in.

2.  Coffee or tea? Coffee for sure. I might as well have an IV filled with caffeine; pretty sure my body runs on it now.

3.  You could coach one team in the basketball world. Which team would it be?  Neil might never let me coach BNB again for saying this but… Michigan State! Go Sparty!

4.  Would you beat BNB Technical Director Neil Smith in a game of H-O-R-S-E?  Well, I think my range might be a better than his, so I’m pretty confident that I’d get the W. I am definitely up for the challenge though, should we make this happen sometime soon? Maybe if I win, Neil has to wear a MSU shirt for a whole day…

5.  Best treat to cool off in the summer?  Living in Vancouver has turned me into a frequent Starbucks consumer… so something iced, caffeinated, and with the iconic green straw.

6.  Where was the one spot in Sussex you could go for peace and quiet growing up?  The outdoor court was my go to. I still go when I’m home and need to take a break. I love seeing that it’s busier these days but there’s nothing like getting some shots up on an empty court to help clear your head.

7.  What’s the worst thing you ever lost?  My Netflix password. I’m not entirely kidding, but I would say probably the NBIAA provincial soccer finals in grade 11 against FHS. We lost in sudden death overtime… on a breakaway… I was the goalkeeper.

8.  When was the last time you hung upside down on monkey bars?  Oh definitely elementary school! I think the last time ended in a traumatic face plant, which prompted me to never do it again.

9.  Did you trash talk as a player?  No, unless you count being hard on myself. I don’t like that part of the game and I really don’t tolerate if from my players, but I was absolutely ruthless when it came to myself.

10. Favourite gym to watch a game in or to play a game in?  Oh that’s a really tough one, I’ve been in a lot of gyms. CBU was always a special place to watch games for me, Acadia has those old wood bleachers that hurt your back but the atmosphere was never disappointing, and now UBC has become a new place to call home. But predictably, I would have to go with SRHS. Growing up I never missed a Dairy Town Classic game and I always wanted to be a Sonic, there’s just something special about the atmosphere. I played my best games in front of that DTC crowd.

11.  Best reality show in television?  I don’t watch a lot of reality TV but when I do it’s usually Masterchef or Chopped. I love to cook and it’s kind of amazing to watch those chefs go to work. I especially love the kid versions because they are just so incredibly talented! Sometimes I think, “hey, maybe I could cook that” but then they blow my mind some more.

12.  Would you rather walk 10 miles or run five miles?  Run 5 miles! I get pretty bored when I run though, so I usually do intervals.

13.  What musical instrument would you love to learn to play?  I taught myself how to play guitar about two years ago which is something I’ve always wanted to do, but for some reason I’ve always wanted to learn to play the fiddle. Must have something to do with my Cape Breton roots.
