BNB Adds Slipp to Full-Time Roster

2019-09-25

(L to R: Carolyn Peppin, Neil Smith, Tyler Slipp)

Stability and consistency are what Basketball New Brunswick has been striving for.

The umbrella group of basketball in the province is showcasing that through its three-member staff which includes a new hire for a new position.

BNB has announced Fredericton’s Tyler Slipp has joined the entity on a full-time basis becoming the organization’s first director of operations.

Fredericton’s Carolyn Peppin has returned from maternity leave and is celebrating her 10th year as BNB’s executive director. Grand Digue’s Neil Smith is BNB’s technical director, a position he has held for seven years.

Slipp had joined BNB as interim executive director when Peppin went on maternity leave in 2018.

‘Basketball New Brunswick has been a model of consistency and its programming is creating more and more interest in the development of the game and improving the quality of players and coaching straight across the board,’ said BNB president Brad Janes of Fredericton. ‘Carolyn has been with BNB for a decade and knows the organization inside and out. Neil has been on courts in all our zones and has become a staple with our coaches. Tyler came in during an interesting time and did a remarkable job running our ship. We’re incredibly fortunate to have three quality individuals overseeing basketball in our province.’

BNB also had veteran coach Ryan Chase working last spring and summer, spearheading the popular Provincial Team Program, designed to encompass 15 and 16-year-old boys and girls in a development model that also features recruiting and teaching coaches new concepts.

‘Our presentations from junior and senior Elite Development Programs to the brand-new Next Wave programming plus our successful minor associations that play from November through March has created a dynamic interest in the game,’ said Janes. ‘Our staff has done a tremendous job in identifying programming. With the help of numerous coaches across the province, our numbers continue to grow. They are constantly looking at new ideas and concepts from youth to adult recreational tournaments. We’re on a strong path.’

Peppin is responsible for the entire BNB operations from her executive director chair.

She works in concert with Slipp to help create new programming and maintain consistent features such as EDP which has exploded entering its seventh year.
Slipp will coordinate a number of projects including grassroots and the Jr NBA programs while Smith continues to work with coaches on fundamentals, improving practice time and ideas and maintaining National Coaching Certification Program courses.

BNB is also coming off hosting back-to-back Canada Basketball age class championships that drew thousands of visitors to New Brunswick and showcased the nation’s top under-17 and under-15 boys and girls.

‘When you look back at so many things that have unfolded within BNB over the past five years, it’s been remarkable,’ said Peppin. ‘We have established a rhythm of success that means we have to keep improving to meet the standards we have set. That’s a great goal to work toward. Working with Neil and Tyler every day and having so many sounding boards like Ryan Chase who does so many things means the basketball community in the province is going to continue to thrive. It’ a great time to be a part of BNB.’
