It’s that time of year when university and collegiate teams begin their recruiting success announcements.

Plenty of those who sign letter of intents to play at the USPORTS, Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association and other levels have represented Basketball New Brunswick on the national stage.

And there are plenty of players who are in first to fifth year at those levels, who represented BNB during their formative years of developing as players.

Let’s have a look and see who’s out there this year and who will be making next level appearances in 2020-21.
We will start with the USPORTS level.

USPORTS

Stanley Mayambo was a long-time BNB stalwart when he was coming up through the system, parlaying that success into a five-year career with Canadian powerhouse Carleton University Ravens of Ottawa.

Mayambo is in his fifth and final season with Carleton in Ontario University Athletics play. He has been part of three national championship teams and also earned a silver medal.

Eva Tumwine and Grace Simpson have been teammates for a long time and continue to play with the University of New Brunswick as key cogs for the Atlantic University Sport Reds.

Tumwine and Simpson played with Fredericton High Black Kats, represented BNB a number of times including the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, QC, and have been UNB starters together the past two seasons.

Other UNB players who played at the national level for BNB are St. George’s Sara Fudge, Miramichi’s Bailey Black, Hanwell’s Katie Daley and redshirt Katie McAffee of Lower Knoxville, who started her career with Acadia University Axewomen.

Speaking of Acadia, that’s where you’ll find former BNB player Claire Ayotte of Perth-Andover, now in her third season.

Saint Mary’s University Huskies have a pair of BNB rookies who played for BNB including Fredericton’s Lucina Beaumont and Torrie Janes.

Katelyn Scott of Riverview and Emily Holt of Moncton are with Dalhousie University Tigers and represented the province at the national level at under-17 and under-15 divisions, respectively.

University of Prince Edward Island Panthers boast four former BNBers including Reese Baxendale, Lauren Fleming, Lauren Harris and Reilly Sullivan.

Sandy Saunders of Grafton is with University of Calgary Dinos and Maddy Colpitts of Fredericton plays with McGill University Martlets.

In Toronto is where you will find Megan Stewart of Saint John, playing with York University Lions and Rachel Farwell of Quispamsis, who is with Ryerson University Rams.

Three former BNBers have signed Letters of Intent to play with UNB next fall including Riverview’s Keira Rafferty, St. George’s Erin Ingalls and Fredericton’s Kylee Speedy.

Saint John’s Julian Roche started his career with University of Santa Clara Broncos of California at the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I level. He returned to Canada to play for Simon Fraser University Clan of Burnaby, BC, a Division II NCAA entrant.

Jamie White is a former Canada Summer Games and BNB player from Saint John, who is now with the St Francis Xavier University X-Men. Whenever St. FX plays against Acadia University Axemen, there are three former BNBers on the floor. Brett Speedy and Jack Tilley both wore BNB colours before moving to USPORTS.

Dalhousie University has two BNB alumni roaring as Tigers, Minwoo Park of Fredericton and Sam Maillet of Moncton.

UNB men’s squad has four former BNBers including high-scoring Chris Spurrell of Quispamsis, Sterling Simpson, Ethan Drost and Rees Hasson of Fredericton.

Stay tuned for a CCAA and Pro citcuit round-up coming soon....
