BNB Hits Ground Running With Virtual Coaching Clinics

2020-04-16

Basketball New Brunswick isn’t sitting idle during the COVID-19 global pandemic crisis. Far from it.

With Canada Basketball officially cancelling its under-17 and under-15 national championships and numerous BNB age class offerings such as under-14 elite, Provincial Team Program under-16 and junior and senior Elite Development Camps unable to be implement, the provincial association is putting technology to use.

The BNB Grassroots Virtual Coaching Clinics will unfold shortly. It is aimed at offering coaching education to all of BNB’s minor associations over the remainder of spring and into summer.

‘Our targets are going to many, but it will provide numerous resources at the rep, club, Junior NBA and grassroots and house league levels for all of our associations,’ said BNB’s Technical Director Neil Smith of Grand Digue. ‘The content will be geared toward coaches working with those developmental age groups.’

BNB will have a stable of coaches lined up from across its vast reservoir, but will also bring in leaders from across Canada and at international levels.

The first offering is set for Wednesday, April 22, with Mike MacKay as the first guest. MacKay is Canada Basketball’s women's high-performance manager.

He will discuss teaching at a developmentally/age appropriate level and the phases/loading of skills as part of the presentation.

‘We all want to be out on the court teaching children, but that is not possible so we’re branching into a different outlet that may just be something that stays around as part of our curriculum,’ said Smith. ‘We want to deliver quality youth programming. It’s not all about X’s and O’s. It’s about development and coaching our coaches.’

BNB will offer one to two clinics a week.

Each clinic will be approximately 45 to 60 minutes long and will be offered live. Access to the content will be recorded and offered back on BNB’s website.

Coaches are asked to register for clinic access by click here and updates will be provided.
