Find out how all of Basketball New Brunswick's Provincial Teams did at their respective National Championships and Canada Games Competitions.

Summer of 2022 was a busy one for the players and coaches in the Basketball New Brunswick high performance pathway. After tryouts to form the teams in May, practices and training the rest of May, June & July with competitions ranging from Montreal to Halifax to Charlottetown to Boston, all 6 BNB provincial teams wrapped up their summer seasons in August. Here are the recaps.

U15 Women: Led by head coach Peter Hickey and assistants Pauline Lordon and Madison Owens, the women represented New Brunswick at the 15U National Championships in Sherbrooke, QC the week of Aug 1st to 6th.

After some tough first round matchups in the 'power pool' with the other top 3 finishers from the last 15U Nationals Championships event in 2019, Team NB faced Alberta in the quarterfinals. The women came up on the wrong side of a 68-43 score line and were sent to the consolation.

Wins over Saskatchewan (57-50) and Manitoba (60-57) meant the team would face BC in the Consolation final for 5th place. Despite an entertaining back and forth game, the women ended up in 6th place after a 59-58 defeat.

U15 Men: Led by Head Coach Nate Horsman and assistants Neil Smith and Kevin Hansen, the U15 Boys went into the Men’s 15U National Championships as the 7th seed and had to face Saskatchewan and BC in their opening round of pool play.

Losses to those very good teams meant a matchup with team PEI with a quarterfinal berth at stake for the men. They unfortunately came out on the wrong side of a 79-57 score and were sent to the consolation side of the tournament.

An 86-68 win against a solid Manitoba team led them to matchups with PEI again and Quebec and resulted in a final placement of 8th for the 15U team.

Guard Jacob Christie was recognized as one of the top 10 players at the event and was named a 2nd team all-star for his efforts.

U17 Women: Led by head coach Bram Russell and assistant coach Dale Murray, the team entered the 2022 Women's National Championships as the 6th seed. With a 9-team tournament, the women had 4 games of pool play over the first three days of the event.

Wins against Newfoundland & Labrador (69-40) and Manitoba (91-57) were balanced by losses to Ontario and Nova Scotia and unfortunately meant the team weren't able to advance to the quarterfinals.

The women finished strong in the consolation pool with repeat wins against Newfoundland (85-52) and Manitoba (86-71) on their way to a 4-2 overall record and a 7th place finish.

U17 Men: Led by head coach Dominic Laviolette and assistants Marc-Andre Leblanc and Kenny Jean-Louis, the team entered the 2022 Men's National Championships in Edmonton, Alberta as the 3rd seeds thanks to their bronze medal winning performance at the 2019 games hosted by Basketball New Brunswick.

First round losses against Quebec, Ontario and Saskatchewan led to a quarterfinal matchup against a high scoring squad from BC. Unable to slow down their tournament-leading offense left Team NB looking for revenge against Saskatchewan in the 5th place game. The team came up just short in a back-and-forth affair and lost 80-76 to finish in 6th place.

Zach Dool was named as a 2nd team tournament all-star for Team New Brunswick after a strong showing throughout the week.

Canada Games 18U Women - Led by head coach Peter Kelly and assistant coaches Madison Belding and Bailey Black, the team entered the week-long Niagara 2022 Canada Games as the 6th seeds.

Pool play wins over Team Yukon, Team Nova Scotia (66-64) and a crossover win over Team Northwest Territories put the 3-0 Team NB against Team Quebec in the Quarterfinals. Despite a good effort, the women came up short 77-56 and were moved to the consolation bracket.

An overtime loss (78-75) in the rematch with Nova Scotia put Team NB in the 7th place game, where they beat Manitoba 86-63 to finish with a 4-2 record for the week.

Canada Games U18 Men - Led by head coach Kyle Woodworth and assistant coaches Jimmy Watters and Joel Everett, the team started the Niagara 2022 Canada Games as the number 3 seed after medalling at the 2019 National Championships hosted by BNB.

A close loss on opening day against Team Ontario (87-77) and a last second defeat to Team Sask (77-74) led to a matchup with their counterparts from Nova Scotia with a semifinal berth on the line. A few bad bounces led to a narrow 90-87 defeat and put Team NB in the consolation round.

A win over Newfoundland (100-72) and a loss to team Quebec (90-57) in the 5th place game left the team with a 6th place result at the games.

Final Results for Team NB teams:

15U Women: 6th place
15U Men: 8th place
17U Women: 6th place
17U Men: 6th place
18U Women: 7th place
18U Men: 6th place

The players will now take a healthy break before a Fall Sr EDP weekend in October and the start of the high school basketball season.
