The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association is back.

And it’s ready, set, almost go for its six teams.

All MWBA eyes will be on Saint John on Saturday night as the league opens its second season.

Hometown Port City Fog will welcome Highway 7 rival Fredericton Freeze to the University of New Brunswick at Saint John for the lid-lifter.

Game time is 7 p.m.

The two teams meet again May 7, a 1 p.m., encounter at Fredericton High School.

The reigning champion Halifax Hornets kick off defence of their title in Windsor against the Edge on Sunday at 1 p.m.

That game is at Avon View High School.

The Freeze defeated Port City, 76-59 back on April 23 in a neutral site game in Miramichi that attracted a full house.

Both rosters have changed dramatically for both teams as coaching staffs have finalized their teams and a 14-player contingent.

‘We have plenty of new faces this year, but we have a solid core returning and we certainly know what to expect going into this season,’ said Fog head coach Madeline Belding, back for her second season. ‘We’re going to have to work for every possession we have, but there is plenty of skill level and veteran leadership. We look forward to seeing Fredericton for the home opener.’

The Freeze has had plenty of new faces on its roster and first-year head coach Kevin Daley.

‘We have plenty of moving parts in the pre-season, but playing two exhibition games was really beneficial to see players in actual game situations,’ said Daley. ‘This league is chalk full of some outstanding talent. If you don’t show up for a quarter, the game can be over. All of our players have to be aware of that.’

The games will be live-streamed.

Links to the outings will be available on game day.
