Service Awards

BNB SERVICE AWARDS INFORMATION

In 1981, Basketball NB implemented a BNB Service Awards recognition program, with guidelines developed by then Awards chair, Don Mills of Moncton. The awards would be given in three categories, Executive/Officials, Coaching and Special Merit. The intention was to recognize service over time to basketball, not only to BNB, but to minor associations, schools, and to the referee’s association. Guidelines mentioned length of service and quality of service. The length of service usually would be in the minimum 12-15 years range although it might be less due to intensity of service by an individual. Due to the nature of our sport, many recipients combined service in more than one aspect of the games, coaching and refereeing, BNB or minor association executive and coach, and so on. For this reason, individuals are not recognized more than once with a service award even though they are involved in more than one aspect of the game.

Individuals with a long history of distinguished service to the game of basketball may be named as an Honorary Life Member of Basketball NB through a motion passed by the BNB Board of Directors. There are presently 16 BNB Honorary Life Members. This recognition is ordinarily given near or at the end of an individual’s volunteer days.

The BNB Awards Committee, through the BNB ED, calls for nominations each year for the Service Awards. In addition, the ED or Awards Committee members may add names to an eligibility list for consideration by the committee. In the short-listing process each year, names on the eligibility list are considered for awards in the various categories and often times two awards are given in each of the three Service Award categories. In particular, the Special Merit award usually recognizes individuals who are involved in more than one aspect of the game. Names of those on the eligibility list who do not receive an award in a particular year are considered in subsequent years as well.

As part of the process of developing an on-going high quality and extensive eligibility list, BNB encourages the NBIAA Coaches Association, the NBAABO, individual schools, minor associations and individuals to submit names of potential recipients to the attention of the BNB Awards Committee. Information about the volunteer, length of service in various aspects of the game, contact information for the individual and any career highlights should be emailed to the BNB office: info@basketball.nb.ca.

A number of new awards have been added in recent years, including the Up and Coming Coach Award, Volunteer of the Year, Team of the Year and Minor Association of the Year.
